NStar Recommendations From the NStar website: www.nstaronline.com

Subject to your own health needs:

  • "Set your thermostat no higher than 68 degrees when you are home and lower the temperature when you go to bed or when you are not at home. This will ensure optimal home heating and save energy.
  • For every degree you lower your thermostat you save about 2 percent off your heating bill.
  • Cut annual heating bills by as much as 10 percent a year by turning your thermostat back 10 to 15 percent for eight hours a day.[1]

NStar has a calculator to help you estimate how much you will save by turning down the thermostat in winter or up in summer. You can also get there from the home page by clicking on Energy Efficiency, then Energy Efficiency Calculator and Thermo Calc

Some tips for staying warm

  • Dress in layers – several light layers are best. Long underwear is making a comeback, with new fabrics to choose from. A zip-up fleecy can be a comfortable last layer
  • Keep your feet warm with socks and slippers. There are now no-shrink washable wool socks available, such as Smartwool.
  • Drink warm beverages.
  • Get exercise. Moving around – even just cleaning the house or taking a walk around the block -- will generate heat.
