This is a working area for the required Municipal Commitments to become a Green Community:
- Municipal leadership (Selectmen, Town Manager) must decide and commit to Needham becoming a Green Community
- Commit to reducing Municipal energy usage by 20% over baseline
- Commit to purchasing only fuel-efficient vehicles (where available).

Purchasing Fuel Efficient Vehicles - DoER Guidance
This file from the DoER provides guidance on the Green Communities requirement to purchase fuel-efficient vehicles, where available, for municipal use.

- Information about School Bus types
- All traditional school buses are over 10,000 pounds GVWR
- Check on weight of van-type buses
- Designed so that there are at least five commercially available vehicles in each defined and covered class
- Uses EPA's combined city & highway MPG
- Vehicles over 8,500 pounds GVWR (Gross Vehicle Weight Rating) are exempt
- Police cruisers are exempt until models are commercially available
- Communities are encouraged to adopt and enforce anti-idling provisions for their fleet
- Develop an inventory of vehicles and a replacement policy
- Combined MPG requirements by class of vehicle:
- 2 wheel drive car - 29 MPG
- 4 wheel drive car - 24 MPG
- 2 wheel drive small pickup - 20 MPG
- 4 wheel drive small pickup - 18 MPG
- 2 wheel drive large pickup - 17 MPG
- 4 wheel drive large pickup - 16 MPG
