Needham Community Farm Committee/Petition
From Green Needham
The Needham Community Farm Committee would like our Town officials to consider a proposal to use the Nike site as a community farm and education center. This center will provide environmental education, recreation, and community building opportunities for Needham residents of all ages.
The Nike site has been vacant for many years, but its use will soon be the topic of discussion by Town officials. The Nike site is the perfect location for a farm and environmental education program. The soil and water at the site has been tested extensively and its high safety rating makes it an ideal location for our farm. The site is surrounded by conservation land which makes it a perfect location to reconnect with the land. The town has already determined that the site is not suitable for a large building, like a school. The only other proposed use for the land at this point is for sports fields.
Needham is a community with diverse needs. Sports is just one way we can support outdoors physical activity. The farm project will expand the range of recreational and educational opportunities available to every Needham resident. The education center and farm will be a place where people of all ages and interests can be outdoors and learn new skills that will enrich their lives.
It is time to make a community commitment to improve the environment and to increase the strength of our local food supply. Surrounding towns like Newton, Dover, Natick Weston, and Framingham have farm programs, which encourage environmental stewardship and provide locally grown organic produce. The Natick Community Organic Farm has been a highly valued resource for the community for more than 20 years. Their programs have been an integral part of the Natick School curriculum for many years.
